Executive Summary
SMR Africa (Pty) Ltd (“SMR”) was established in 2016 as a private company with business interests in the Agriculture sector in South Africa. SMR have developed an extraordinary cultivar of Napier Grass primarily for South Africa conditions. This fast-growing grass serves as important nutritional forage for all livestock.
Our farm in Bronkhorstspruit has suitable arable land and abundant water to grow the grass between September and May. The grass forage conserved as silage or ensiled forage will keep for up to three years without deteriorating while still very palatable to livestock. This could prove beneficial during winter or those drought periods. Our cultivar of Napier grass is a unique high protein variation of grass suitable as forage grass/crop primarily used in feeding systems e.g. cattle, sheep, chickens, horses and goats that are highly dependent on the availability of quality feed and forage resources.
The grass possesses many desirable characteristics, including high yield, tolerance to intermittent drought and high water use efficiency, making it forage of choice. It has the ability to withstand repeated cutting and will rapidly regenerate, producing palatable leafy shoots. Consequently it promises to considerably benefit livestock value chains.
SMR business which includes offtakes for forage grass and livestock as well as export of grass to Africa, Middle East and China. SMR have expertise in supply chain, procurement, Agri processing, sales and marketing within the agriculture sector.
ARC/LNR (The Agricultural Research Council), who has conducted an extensive test on our Napier grass, is the premier science institution that conducts research to foster innovation for a sustainable agriculture sector. From their findings in this test report made the following comment regarding our Napier grass:
“The nutritional content of your grass is relatively good. It compared well with Lucerne and far much better than other grasses like Eragrostis/Teff. It is a good quality feed source and will provide sufficient nutrients to your livestock. Its protein and energy content is above the maintenance requirement of cattle, which makes it a good feedstuff for production of animals.”
